Listen-up // 07

Having just returned from a relaxing holiday, I’ve been finding it difficult to settle back into the swing of work. One of the things I like to do when this happens is search about for some new music to inspire me. Trouble is I’m quite choosy, so the drill often takes some time.
I bought a great album back in 2004 called ‘Dialogue’ by a duo called ‘The Honeymoon’ (their debut and, unfortunately, only album to date). I haven’t found anything since to match it in style and composure, nothing that makes me feel the way that that album does. Albums often bring back memories of the things happening at the time you first listened to them, and Dialogue reminds me of the long summer, playing gigs in bars and generally having a fun time with friends. Searching through iTunes last week, I happened upon a group called ‘The Weepies’ and their 2006 album ‘Say I Am You’. They’re an indie pop-folk band led by duo (and husband/wife) Steve Tannen and Deb Talan. I’m not normally taken by the folk sound (maybe because I have limited experience of the genre) but their music really intrigued me, even after just one listen. Kim Ruehl in an April 2006 About.com review of ‘Say I Am You’ described their sound as:
“Subtly intoxicating folk-pop”
A lot of their music to me sounds somewhat quaint, but in a good way. The tracks have a light-hearted vibe, creating something of an overture to a deeper set of emotions, meaning the album demands a few listens to fully appreciate the subjects explored. I think this will be my soundtrack of summer 2008, alongside ‘Life in Technicolour’ and ‘Strawberry Swing’ by Coldplay.
Worth a listen… standout tracks:
